Description of environment e.g.: shift patterns, number of beds
The pre-assessment clinic deals with all adult patients on the waiting list for elective
surgery. The patients come from various specialities, general surgery, breast care,
gynaecology, orthopaedic, ENT, maxillo facial and urology. The clinic hours are
8.30am – 5pm. Hours may vary slightly.
The pre-assessment staff also manage the MRSA screening clinic, where all patients
for elective admission are screened for MRSA prior to admission. This is located
within the pre-assessment clinic in clinic 3. This clinic’s hours are 9.00am –
4.45p.m.Monday- Friday. Closed on weekends & bank holidays.

Ward/Unit Philosophy of Care

The aim of the pre-assessment team is to ensure patients are assessed for
their fitness for anaesthetic prior to surgery, to reduce the risk of
complications post operatively. Providing access to relevant resources if
necessary to optimise patient fitness prior to surgery.

The multi-professional team will see patients in a timely manner, providing
information and the opportunity to discuss any concerns regarding patients’
forthcoming admission and procedure.

A department developmental plan is reviewed on a yearly basis and is
used to help personal development and to identify training needs at
Staff development reviews.

Are there plans to make changes to the placement area in the next
year that would affect student allocations?
A period of time in Theatre Admissions Unit will be worked into the
weekly timetable for the student to experience another part of the patient
journey for safe preparation for surgery. The mentor working with student will
be on the off duty once a week to go and work in this area. The student will
go with mentor and then stay with the Theatre admissions Staff for the rest of
the shift to experience patient preparation on day of operation and transfer to
theatre.
