LEARNING GOALS
Geometry: recognizing geometric shapes in the environment
Look C l o s e ly
Materials
record sheet (optional), paper, pencil, picture books (optional)
Set Up
Duplicate necessary number of record sheets (pages 62 or 63)
if you choose to use them. Prepare a sample.
Center Guidelines
Be sure that your students have had experience finding
geometric shapes in real life objects before having them
complete the record sheet.
Activities
Children look throughout the classroom (or use picture books)
to identify geometric shapes in objects. If you plan to have
the children use either record sheet, they will probably need a
few visits to this center to complete it. They should write in
appropriate objects under the corresponding shapes. You may
also choose to adapt the record sheet or tell students during
the center visit what their target shape is. For example, a
teacher may say, “Today during the geometry center, those who
visit the center will need to find three objects in our classroom
that have a rectangle somewhere in its shape. Draw a picture
of each on your paper using your pencil.”
Extensions
Measurement After identifying the objects, students can measure
the lengths of each using nonstandard or standard measurement.
Data Analysis and Probability Once the information is gathered
from a group of children, they can tally the total number of objects
representing each respective shape.
