Due to mission critical needs, the agency is offering a Student Loan Repayment or Recruitment Incentive for
the following locations; Douglas, Lukeville, Nogales and San Luis, AZ, Calexico, CA, Coburn Gore and
Jackman, ME, Pembina and Portal, ND, and Presidio, TX. The Student Loan Repayment pays $10,000.00 per
year for three (3) years for federally insured student loans. The Recruitment Incentives pays 25% (except
Pembina pays 10%) of an employee's base pay (including locality) per year for three (3) years. A service
agreement is required prior to entering on duty. This incentive applies to new federal employees only and is
dependent upon the availability of funds.

DUTIES:
Being a Customs and Border Protection Officer makes you a valuable member of the Federal Law Enforcement Officer

You qualify for the GS-5 grade level (starting salary $32,318) if you possess one of the following:
a. Three years of general work experience that demonstrates the ability to meet and deal with people and the ability to

b. A bachelor's degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university; OR

National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience) Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including
volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g.,
professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical
competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid

Experience as a CBP Explorer may be qualifying if your resume provides sufficient information to credit your

Firearm Proficiency: Firearm proficiency is required for all CBP Officers and is part of the training provided.
Current Federal Employees: Current federal employees who apply to this announcement will be required to serve a
probationary period in accordance with 5 CFR 315 and may be required to accept a change to lower grade, which may
reduce their salary based on Federal pay regulations. Note: If you are a current GS-12 step 1, your salary will be
reduced to a GS-7 step 10, which equates to an approximate $18,000 salary reduction (based on locality). Repromotion is not guaranteed. Timeframes and grade level re-promotion is at the discretion of the agency and will be
subject to a probationary period.
Probationary Period: You must serve a one-year probationary period during the first year of his/her initial permanent
federal appointment to determine fitness for continued employment.
Formal Training: You will complete a paid pre-academy orientation for approximately 30 days at their home port prior
to attending the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) (https://www.fletc.gov/glynco-georgia) for
approximately 17 - 19 weeks at Glynco, GA. Candidates selected for duty locations where they are required to be
proficient in reading, writing and speaking Spanish will be required to either pass a Spanish language proficiency
examination or attend a 6-week long Spanish immersion class at FLETC.
Uniforms: This position requires wearing an officially approved uniform while in a duty status.
Shift Work: This position requires regular and recurring shift work. You must be willing and available to work rotating
shifts. You may also be rotated between assignments and duty locations.
HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:
You will be evaluated based on your resume, supporting documents, and responses to the job questionnaire. If you
meet the qualifications, you must take and pass the CBP Officer Entrance Examination. Test scores prior to June
2014 are no longer valid.
The exam (external assessment) contains the following (3) assessments: Reasoning Skills, Writing Skills, and the CBP
Experience Record. To be eligible, applicants must pass the exam with a score of at least 70. Proper test preparation is

You should take the CBP Officer Pre-test (https://usahire.opm.gov/assess/pretest/landing) (sample entrance exam).
The pre-test will give you a preview of the types of questions you can expect to see on the actual entrance exam.
You will not be able to retake the exam for six months regardless of whether you pass or fail.
