NCFE LEVEL 1 CERTIFICATE IN CREATIVE
STUDIES: CRAFT
Content:
This exciting subject is designed for students who have an interest
in craft or would like to work in the craft industries.
Through this course, students will be given the choice and
opportunity to explore the many areas of craft that they have an
interest in which could include:
 Wood crafts
 Floristry
 Pottery and Ceramics
 Photography
 Textiles and Textile Art
 Stained glass
 Cake decorating
 Jewellery making
 Garment making
and many more!
This course encourages and inspires students to explore their
creative strengths. With an emphasis on working independently to
research different areas of craft and the craft industry, students will
develop their own unique craft styles. This course is very handson with large amounts of practical work.
This course aims to:
 Develop a broad understanding of craft
 Develop a significant knowledge of working in the
vocational sector
 Help learners to use raw materials, tools and equipment
safely and competently
 Help learners develop positive attitudes towards working as
a team
Why are crafts so important?
UK Craft industries turn over £400 million each year and the
number of craft businesses has increased by 20% in 10 years.
There are over 25,000 craft jobs in the UK alone.

CRAFT

This course is completely coursework based and there is no
written exam.
The qualification consists of 4 coursework pieces:
Unit 03 Create

Evidence for your portfolio could be annotated sketches but it
doesn’t all have to be about drawing. Evidence could be
photographs, flow diagrams, video footage, mood boards, written
feedback, models, tables, graphs and spreadsheets.
Each unit will be graded as Not Yet Achieved, Pass, Merit and
Distinction (with distinction being the highest grade achievable).
What skills are required?


An interest in different crafts and the craft industry
Willing to work independently, not relying on teachers to
generate your own craft ideas
 A basic knowledge of literacy and numeracy
 Good communication skills to work as part of a team
 Willing to accept feedback from your peers
 Ability to work sensibly and safely in a practical
environment
 An interest in environmental and sustainable issues
 To be able to plan your time effectively
And most importantly…
Being passionate about being creative and designing items
for others to enjoy!
Studying Level 1 Craft may lead to:
After successfully completing this course, students will be
awarded a Level 1 Certificate in Creative Studies: Craft.
Students may wish to find a work based apprenticeship in the
craft industries such as furniture design, cabinet making, floristry,
gardening, beauty therapist, jewellery making, engineering trades,
product design, pottery and textiles.

With this qualification, students could go on to study further
vocational qualifications at college such as:
