2.
Principles of working
Filters series FTA and FTA/A are suitable to be used for the water treatment in residential
and industrial applications. They can be safety used for drinking water, since all materials are
suitable to get in touch with food stuff.
The filters are designed and realized according to most technological advanced solutions.
The current cleaning of the filtering cartridge by the backwashing warrants the total removing of
the solids trapped along the filtering surface. The standard filtration rate is 50 µm; 100 µm
filtration cartridge is also available upon request.
2.1.
Semi automatic filters series FTA
When the filter is clogged, the filtering cartridge can be cleaned by just opening the manual
drain valve, mounted on the bottom side of the filter (see fig. 1). This operation features a
depression inside the bowl, pushing the cartridge downwards of the filter and automatically
reversing the water flow, from inside towards outside (countercurrent).
The backwashing flow carries away to drain the solids trapped along the surface of the
cartridge. When the valve is closed the water pressure and the special spring push again the
cartridge on service position. The cleaning operation does not interrupt the feeding of water.
2.2.
Automatic filters serie FTA/A
These filters are complete with a solenoid valve instead of manual valve; the opening of the
valve is controlled by a timer adjustable according to attached special instructions.

For the installation of the filter proceed as follows :
• withdraw carefully the filter and pressure gauge from the packaging.
• screw the pressure gauge on its thread hole on the head of the filter; use teflon tape on the
gauge thread, before screwing.
• it is recommended to instal the filter with a by-pass line (two shut-off valves and one bypass valve). The by-pass is not supplied with filter. The arrow marked on the head of the
filter shows the water flow.
CAUTION !! Never use sealing material on the thread connections of the filter.
• connect the hose of the drain valve to a floor drain using a proper sized flexible tubing
(max length 2 meters); fix it with a hose clamp. The floor drain must be at a lower level than
the hose connection. Do not bend or throttle the tubing.

Special instructions & suggestions
For the best results in starting-up and correct working of the filters, follows the directions
below :
A. Put the self-cleaning filter serie FTA on the inlet line of the water, immediately
downstream of the water meter, mounting shut-off and by-pass valves.
B. The filter must never be installed along the suction line of a pump, in order to avoid an
internal depression and implosion of the bowl of the filter.
WARNING ! Use only water to clean the bowl in Trogamid T. NEVER use alcohol or solvent !

A typical installation.
An example of how to install the filter is shown below :
5.
Starting-up & adjustement
5.1.
Normal condition of use.
The starting-up of the unit requires the following operation :
A. Be sure that the drain valve is closed (for manual valve, the lever must be across the
bowl, for the solenoid valve normally closed type, the contact of the timer OFF).
B. Put the filter under pressure, opening slowly the inlet shut-off valve; check for any
leakage.
C. Let the filter fill of water, by opening the outlet shut-off valve; when the bowl is 3/4 filled,
open a cock of any utilization downstream of the filter, in order to release air; when the
flow of water is continuous and without air, close the cock.
D. Check the correct working of the cartridge; when the drain valve is opened, the cartridge
must be pushed downwards on the bottom of the bowl. If the cartridge does not move,
open the bowl (read carefully what described below, § 6.2) and twist slightly the cartridge
until it seems free to move pushed by the spring.
The filter is on service.

5.2.
Timer adjustment (serie FTA/A only )
Factory set :
At the shipment the timer is adjusted to run the backwashing of the filter every night at 00:01
a.m., (ON impulsive event=00.01, duration adjustable between 0 and 59 seconds, factory set :
15”).
The adjustment can be modified according to the directions of the special manual of the
timer, paragraph “Impulsive event”.
See the attached special instructions of the timer for further informations.
6.
Service & maintenance
The filters are equipment designed to treat raw water supplied from municipalities or
from well.
ANY OTHER APPLICATIONS OF THE EQUIPMENT DIFFERENT THAN THE MENTIONED
ONES IS MADE UNDER THE ONLY RESPONSIBILITY OF THE USER.
For a correct utilization and working of the filter it is required that the water pressure
is within the stated values (see § 3 pag. 4).
6.1.
Current maintenance (FTA serie only)
The current maintenance of the filter consists of :
• cleaning of the cartridge ; proceed as follows :
− open the drain valve for 15" - 20" (seconds). This operation causes a depression inside
the bowl that pushes downwards the filtering cartridge and automatically reverses the
flow of water through the cartridge itself. The backwashing flow carries away to drain the
solids trapped along the surfaces of the cartridge.
− close the drain valve. The pressure inside the bowl returns at normal value and the
special spring pushes upwards the cartridge on service position. It is not required to
open the bowl.
NOTE 1: for water supplied from municipalities, it is suggested to feature this operation at
least once a month. Whether required, repeat the above described operations two
or three times, and allow the settlement of the solids for few seconds, between one
backwashing and the following one.
NOTE 2: for water supplied from well, it is suggested to feature this operation at least once
a week. Whether required, repeat the above described operations two or three
times, and allow the settlement of the solids for few seconds, between one
backwashing and the following one.
NOTE 3: during the backwashing, (untreated) water is supplied to utilization. However, it is
suggested to close the outlet valve of the filter in order to have the highest pressure
inside the filter and the best results in cleaning.

6.2.
Special maintenance
Once and a while, a special cleaning of the stainless steel net of the cartridge could be
required, according to the quality of raw water and the solids contained.
Proceed as follows:
• Close the inlet and outlet shut-off valves
• Release pressure inside filter by opening the drain valve.
• Loosen carefully the closing band by unscrewing its screw and hold the bowl in order to
avoid that it falls down.
CAUTION !! The closing band is not fixed to the head neither to the bowl; hence, when
unscrewed it must be hold to avoid falling down and damages. Make always
this operation with care. Any breaking or damage caused by non-observance of
above directions is out of our responsibility.
• Withdraw the filtering cartridge from the bowl; use protective gloves, in the case the
cartridge is spoiled.
• Dip the cartridge in a diluted acid solution (i.e. hydrochloridric acid at 5 %), for approx 10
minutes. Use protective gloves and glasses for this operation.
• Rinse the cartridge with plenty of running water, gently brushing or replace the cartridge
with a new one, if it is spoiled.
• Place the cartridge inside the bowl; check that it seems free to move on vertical whether
pushed by the spring.
• Put the bowl under the head of the filter; take care in correctly placing the cartridge in its
own seat under the head and the O-ring in its own seat at the edge of the bowl.
• Tighten the screw of the closing band.
• Open the shut-off valves.
CAUTION !! Whether water contains sludge, lime, colloids, it is suggested to feature the
special maintenmace more often.
6.3.
Disposal
In case of disposal of the unit or parts of it, it must be made according to local laws
concerning the waste of the materials.
