Panorama of the University
ipetsk State Technical University (LSTU) is
one of the leading educational institutions of
the Central Black-Earth region of the Russian
Federation.
Established in 1956 as the Evening faculty
of Tula Mechanical Institute, the first and only
technical university in the region began its history
with training specialists majoring in:
- Technology of mechanical engineering, metalcutting machines and tools;
- Machinery and technology of foundry.
The number of students was then 125.
In 1959 the Evening faculty was reorganized into
the Lipetsk evening faculty of Moscow Institute of
Steel and Alloys, and in 1966 it was reorganized
into the Lipetsk branch of the Institute. In 1973,
the branch became Lipetsk Polytechnic Institute,
comprising four faculties that trained engineers
majoring in 14 fields.
In 1994 the institute obtained the status of a
technical university.
Currently LSTU is a diversified university training
specialists for the metallurgical, machine building,
chemical and other industries, as well as for
academic, university and industrial science.
Today LSTU is the only state technical university
in the Lipetsk region, entirely complying with
modern educational standards. It comprises 8
faculties and 2 institutes.
There are 44 departments in the university.
More than 7000, students study here. The
educational process at the University is conducted
in accordance with the State Educational Standard
of Higher Professional Education, adopted in the
Russian Federation. Currently, the university has
created and successfully implemented a multilevel
system of educational programs for bachelors

Following the recent changes in the Russian
economic policy, Lipetsk, as a major industrial
center, has successful contacts with many foreign
manufacturing companies. These contacts are
also realized at the university which is closely
related to the industrial complexes of the city. For
instance, in 2003 an agreement was signed on
cooperation in technology and the management of
small and medium machine-building enterprises of
the Lipetsk region through the establishment of a
starting center taking into account the experience
of «Mechano» service center (Italy).
LSTU has for many years cooperated with the
Indesit Corporation, which produces refrigerators
and washing machines in Lipetsk.
Another important project in the framework of
international cooperation is the «Tempus-Tacis»,
whose aim is to improve the qualification of RF
transport workers.
The volume of fundamental and applied research
per unit of teaching staff reached 131.33 thousand
rubles in 2012, which is 2.6 times greater than
the accreditation indicators of the University.
The number of published monographs per 100
professors and teachers was 7.8 at the threshold
value of 2. The number of published textbooks per
100 professors and teachers was 7.4 with the
required 0.5. The number of branches of science
within which research projects are fulfilled equals
15, whereas it was sufficient to have 5 to confirm
the status of the university.
In 2012 LSTU won the competition on the
support program for students’ associations. The
total volume of finance amounted to 100,000
thousand roubles.
Much attention is paid to the development of

he history of the extramural faculty (until
recently it was called the “evening” faculty)
is the history of establishing higher technical
education in Lipetsk; it is the history of formation of
the personnel with their traditions; it is the history
of scientific schools’ formation and development. It
was the Extramural faculty which gave origin to our
University.
Initially the Evening faculty was founded in 1956
(at that time it was a faculty of Tula mechanical
institute). In 1959 the Evening faculty of Moscow
Institute of Steel was founded in Lipetsk. In 1966
the Evening faculty was reorganized into the
Lipetsk branch of Moscow Institute of Steel and
Alloys. In 1972 on the basis of the Lipetsk branch
of Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys Lipetsk
Polytechnical Institute was organized. Its structure,
along with the faculties of full-time tuition, included
its own Evening faculty. In 1998 this Evening faculty
was renamed into the extramural faculty.
Over its 50 years’ history the extramural faculty
has trained more than 9,000 engineers and highly
educated specialists. Graduating students of the
faculty went a long way for developing the industrial
plants and construction industry of Lipetsk and the
Lipetsk region. Today 2,150 students are being
trained at the extramural faculty. The training is
realized by 275 lecturers from 39 departments,
including 38 professors and doctors of sciences,
135 associate professors and candidates of
sciences. The faculty’s pride is its graduates –
the President of International Metallurgist Union,
USSR Minister of Metallurgy S.V. Kolpakov; the
President of Russian metal production exporters
Union, distinguished metallurgist of the RSFSR,
academician of the Russian Engineering Academy,

Prize and the RF State Prize S.Z. Afonin; mayor of
Lipetsk M.V. Gulevsky and hundreds of distinguished
Russian citizens.
Students’ life
T
he students are the main heroes of the
university community. That is why the
educational process in LSTU is based on
carefulness and thoroughness in future
specialists’ training with the support of the
latest achievements in fundamental sciences,
on the implementation of advanced educational
technologies, on the development of personal
qualities of young specialists.
Students’ research activity is the main
component of the university’s research.
Younger students are involved in scientific
research as members of students’ scientific
communities, which are organized at many
departments of the University. Students’
scientific conferences, competitions in different
subjects, creative contests and festivals are
organized at the University annually. The LSTU
students win medals and diplomas of Russian
and international scientific forums.
Today LSTU has an effective student
government. The student government was
established in 1998, it has its own regulations
and closely cooperates with the LSTU authorities.
In general, student government regulates
students’ taking part in the administration
and organization of the educational process;
speaks for the students at different levels;
helps the University authorities to ensure the
quality control of specialists’ training; takes
part in the organization of cultural events.
Since 1975 LSTU has had students’ club
“Gelios”. Over the years “Gelios” became the
cultural centre not just of our University but
of our city. The cultural events organized by
“Gelios” are so popular that all young people of
Lipetsk dream of attending them. Today “Gelios”
includes 14 creative teams, among them the
popular theatre “Zong”, the pop art studio

A wonderful singer Yekaterina Shavina
(Physics and Technology Faculty) in May 2009
became the winner of the regional festival
of young leaders “To lead!” Good conditions
are created at the University for work of the
students’ club – the assembly hall for 1,100
people, rehearsal rooms, spacious storage
spaces for costumes and equipment. The
Zong theatre has its own auditorium with 100
seats.
The Polytechnik sport club jointly with the
department of physical training has organized
27 groups in 14 sports with more than 500
young people in them. Mass competitions are
held in many sports with all university students
taking part in them. The LSTU basketball
team is the permanent winner of regional
competitions, the table tennis team is the
2009 champion of the Lipetsk region, power
sports athletes annually join the ranks of the
Russian masters of sports. For this there are
sports buildings with two game rooms, three
gyms, a swimming pool of 16×25 m2, as well
as open sports facilities with an area of 1570
square meters.
Students’ life
The Students’ Council of the hostel solves its
specific problems: controls sanitary conditions
in rooms, considers emerging conflicts and
takes necessary measures of influence.
Following the initiative of the Council, the hostel
was equipped with six halls for sports activities;
track and field, wrestling, board games (tennis)
groups started to work, and a computer room
opened. One hall is used for holding cultural
and mass events. All students from other
towns and villages have the opportunity to live
in the hostel.
Students’ union represents the interests of
the students, it helps students with employment
in the summer and vacation time, provides
legal assistance, organizes internships abroad,
actively promotes cultural and sports life of
the students.
Students’ trade union committee of the
university uniting 98.87% of their total number
is the initiator and the main organizer of the
regional festival of students’ sports and health,
the festival of creativity and sport, contest for
the best teacher “Sages”, as well as subbotniks,
trips and excursions.
An important element in ensuring social care
for the students is the LSTU catering complex.
It consists of a canteen for 500 people, a cafe,
two smaller canteens and a confectionery
shop.
