The History of Emerson Network
Power Surge Protection, Inc.
Binghamton, NY
Our Beginning
Our Future
Former Control
Concepts facility
on Water Street,
Binghamton, NY.
Emerson Network Power Surge Protection, Inc.,
(formerly Control Concepts Corporation), located in
Binghamton, NY, was established in 1971 as a
consulting engineering company.
One of the first consulting opportunities Control
Concepts received was a contract from Corning Glass
Corporation to determine the exact cause of erratic
mix quantities in glass production.
Control Concepts engineers analyzed Corning’s
production methods and found transient voltages
generated on the AC power lines were the culprit.
Transient voltages are brief power disturbances
characterized by high amplitude, high frequency,
and often-high energy. Emerson Network Power
commonly refers to these events as ‘Dirty Power.’ If
equipment is left unprotected, transients or ‘Dirty
Power’, can scramble data, degrade circuitry, and
even destroy components, which is why the Institute
of Electrical and Electronic Engineers or (IEEE), has
recognized transient voltages as the leading cause of
sensitive electronic equipment malfunction.
Control Concepts' solution to Corning’s glass
production process was to create a patented
technology known as Islatrol™ Active Tracking
Filters™. This technology prevents internally-generated
transients that can cause
downtime and also protects
valuable equipment from
Islatrol™ IC+ Series
AC Power filter
externally-generated transients.
Because of its reliability and performance qualities,
the Islatrol™ name has become an industry standard,
even today.
As Islatrol brand products grew to be an industry
standard, Control Concepts grew to become a power
quality leader. In 1990, they were acquired by Liebert
Corporation, a subsidiary of Emerson. Liebert
manufactures and markets AC Power Systems,
Precision Cooling and Infrastructure Management
and Monitoring. This
acquisition offered Control
Concepts many new and
exciting opportunities for
further growth of surge
protection products and
Liebert ACV Series (AccuVar) expanded Emerson’s product
diversity by having a leading power quality division.
To further enhance the breadth of products, Edco,
Inc., a low voltage surge protection manufacturer,
based in Ocala, FL, was acquired in 1997 as a means
of offering a complete power protection solution.
Edco specialized in telecommunications and
data/signal line protection for low voltage
applications in traffic controls, security
systems and industrial processing.
Today, Edco brand low voltage surge
protection products are preferred and
requested by customers world-wide.
