Rounding is a form of estimation. It can be a way to change a number to another number that is easier
to compute. It is used when an exact answer is not required. In our everyday lives we use estimation on
a daily basis. Can you think of a time when you just needed to know, “About how many?”
A number line can be a useful model. Use that or another visual picture as a model to show your work.

Max went on a hike and came across an anthill with 23,516 ants. A little while later he found a beehive
that had 5,089 bumble bees. Along the way he spotted two groups of migrating butterflies totaling at
least 50,000. How many insects (ants, bees, & butterflies) did Max find on his hike? (Make sure to show
your work and label your answer).
About how many more ants did he find than bumble bees? (round to the nearest thousand)
About how many more butterflies did he find than ants? (round to the nearest ten thousand)
