It is student’s responsibility to contact the preceptor one week prior to the
scheduled start date. Students are to meet the radiologist on duty in
reading room 1.503 at 9am at the address below.
Course Description and Prerequisites

The intent of this course is to re-familiarize the medical student with the basic principles of radiologic
imaging. Students will be shown the many different modalities used within the department of Radiology
and will become familiar with interpreting medical diagnosis results using those modalities. It is our hope
that this course will lead to a better understanding of the many services provided by Radiology.

Learning Outcomes & Objectives
Objectives:
 Teach the student the proper radiographic approach in evaluating clinical problems.
 Give the student an understanding of the proper performance of basic diagnostic imaging
procedures, particularly the order performing the procedures.
 Give the student some basic skills in interpretation of the more common x-ray examinations, CT
scans, and ultrasound scans.
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
 Interpret some of the more common x-ray examinations and, specifically, be able to diagnose more
evident fractures, pneumonias, pneumothoraces, pleural effusions, and some of the more common
gastrointestinal and urologic disorders.
 List the proper sequence in the radiographic evaluation of a clinical problem.
 Recognize normal and pathologic anatomy on cross sectional images.

Should the course director determine remediation is required, the remediation plan will be at the
discretion of the course director and on a case by case basis depending on the issues involved.
Remediation plans could entail some (or all) of the following examples: Additional clinical shifts,
research papers, presentations, article reviews, exams, directed reading, web-based modules, etc. If the
student performance results in a failure of the elective, it will be recommended that the elective be taken
again in its entirety.
Attendance and Make-up Policies
TAMHSC – COM student handbook states: Students who miss more than 20% of a 4th year
elective for any reason (2 weekdays during a two-week rotation or 4 weekdays for 4 week
rotation) will require a remediation plan. To request an absence all students must use the online
