Course (Catalog) Description
Intermediate to advanced course on learning, remembering, and using English
vocabulary. Students will learn how to determine meaning from context, use dictionaries
appropriately, analyze roots, affixes, and parts of speech, and apply sentence structure
knowledge to increase receptive and productive vocabulary.

Learning Objectives
Students will learn to
A. use context clues to determine meanings of new words and phrases.
B. apply parts of speech and sentence structure awareness to determine meanings and uses
of new words and phrases.
C. use mnemonic devices and other study strategies to remember and use new vocabulary.
D. use a monolingual dictionary effectively to find and choose from word meanings and
uses.
E. recognize and use different word forms.
F. use knowledge of roots and affixes to determine meanings of new words.
G. recognize and use vocabulary from the Academic Word List.
H. apply vocabulary strategies to increase reading comprehension.

Academic Integrity
Students and employees at Oakton Community College are required to demonstrate
academic integrity and follow Oakton’s Code of Academic Conduct. This code prohibits:

plagiarism (turning in work not written by you, or lacking proper citation),
falsification and fabrication (lying or distorting the truth),
helping others to cheat,

making or accepting bribes, special favors, or threats, and
any other behavior that violates academic integrity.

There are serious consequences to violations of the academic integrity policy. Oakton’s
policies and procedures provide students a fair hearing if a complaint is made against
you. If you are found to have violated the policy, the minimum penalty is failure on the
assignment and, a disciplinary record will be established and kept on file in the office of
the Vice President for Student Affairs for a period of 3 years.

Late Assignments:

Outside Reading: The more you read in English, the faster your reading and
vocabulary will improve. You should make sure that you spend at least ten
hours each week reading material of your choice in English.

