SUMMARY
Extensive experience in analytical instrumentation, methods development and
applications to novel measurements in order to advance research and monitoring in a wide variety of
disciplines, such as the characterization of combustion engine emissions, atmospheric aerosols, bioaerosols, airborne pathogens, stable isotopes, biomolecules, sport anti-doping, MEMS technology for
analytic instrumentation, and environmental monitoring. Always open to learn, investigate, and apply new
techniques to a broad range of scientific investigations.

OVERVIEW OF EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS
Analysis Techniques- developed and applied analytical techniques including:
 Separations such as gas chromatography (GC), thermal desorption, and comprehensive 2D GC.
 Ionization techniques such as electron impact (EI), chemical (CI), and laser desorption ionization
(LDI).
 Mass spectrometry (MS) instrumentation such as quadrupole, time-of-flight (TOF), and magnetic
sector, including isotope ratio MS, single particle MS, aerosol particle beam MS, and GC-MS.

Development of standards and techniques for the detection of the use of exogenous anabolic steroids
from urine in sport doping, gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS), comprehensive 2D gas
chromatography (GCxGC)-MS, GC-combustion stable isotope mass spectrometry (IRMS) measurements
(GC-IRMS), novel instrumentation for GCxGC separations coupled to IRMS and position specific isotopic
analysis. Micro-fabrication of micro-reactors, and single particle aerosol mass spectrometry and X-ray
free electron laser imaging.
Duties & Responsibilities
 Author, Co-Author grant proposals to fund research, salary.
 Management, training, and guidance of students in research.
 Conduct cutting edge research in advanced two-dimensional gas chromatography (GCxGC)
separations coupled with MS and on-line combustion high precision isotope ratio mass

Sciences Division, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), University of California.
Development and application of Single Particle Aerosol Mass Spectrometry (using laser desorption
ionization time-of-flight) for the rapid detection of bio-aerosols and environmental monitoring &
characterization of atmospheric particulates.
Duties & Responsibilities
 Co-Authored grant proposals to fund research.
 Conducted cutting edge research, in the development of analytical methodology (including mass
spectrometry) for the detection of bio-aerosols of concern to national security and public health.
 Built, maintained, and troubleshot lab built mass spectrometer systems, in this case advanced
single particle aerosol mass spectrometers. Maintain and troubleshoot other equipment, such as
particle sizers, advanced aerosol generators, particle collectors.

laboratory studies of smog formation and the characterization of diesel engine exhaust.
Duties & Responsibilities
 Conducted cutting edge research, in the development of analytical methodology for the study of
organic aerosol formation and diesel exhaust nano-particle emissions of interest in air pollution.
 Built, maintained, and troubleshot lab built mass spectrometer system, in this case a thermal
desorption particle beam mass spectrometer, and other equipment, such as differential mobility
analyzers, particle counters, and a 7000 liter environmental chamber.
 Key methologies included EI, thermal vaporization, quadrupole MS, particle sizing and sampling.
