In the Metropolitan Museum of Art, I selected three items from the Greek section:
“Kouros (statue of youth), “Head from A Herm, and “Athena flying her Owl.”
The first item I chose to discuss is “Kouros (statue of youth).” The marble statue
from the 7th century B.C. Kouros is the earliest monumental Greek marble statue in the
Museum.”1 This statue could have been a dedication or placed on a tomb of a young man.

In the Metropolitan Museum of Art, I selected three items from the Ancient Near East section. I chose:
“Head of a Dignitary”, “The Head of a King,” and “Ur-Ningirsu, Son of Gudea.”(304)
The art form that stands out is the pose, and the left foot that extends forward, which are
indications of Egyptian art.
The second art I chose to talk about is the “ Head from a Herm,” a marble piece
from the mid 5th century B.C. “A herm is a quadrangular shaft, typically of stone…”2
The art form that stood out was the mouth of the piece, “ it beautifully exemplifies the
gravity and nobility of classical Greek sculpture.”3

The last art piece I selected to discuss is “ Athena Flying her Owl,” this statue reveals
Athena’s figure through her tightly draped clothing. Athena, goddess of war, it shows this
with the helmet on her head; there are also indications that she had a spear in her left
hand. The art form that stands out is the owl in her hand; she is about to let the sacred
animal free. “The combination of dignity and informality gives this small bronze its
particular character”4
In conclusion, these three art pieces selected were from the Greek section of the
MET.
