Strengthening Literacy Skills with Primary Sources
Consider the units/topics you will teach in the fall, and choose either a fiction or nonfiction
book appropriate for inclusion into that unit.
Develop a comprehensive lesson plan incorporating your book and the accompanying primary
sources which enhance student understanding of the text. This comprehensive plan will
include:
_____The worksheet connecting teaching resources and strategies to lesson plan (this will be
the competed in-class assignment).
_____The collection tool—available on the TPS online agenda available at www.UNCO.edu/tps.
You will need to “collect” a minimum of 6 primary sources of at least 3 genres.
_____The completed lesson plan template—available on the TPS online agenda available at
www.UNCO.edu/tps. Be especially clear on the step-by-step procedure for your lesson.
_____A sample of the product you will ask your students to complete.
_____The rubric you will use to assess the final student product which measures your students’
achievement of the selected standards.
_____Your plan—in a short paragraph—for your implementation of your lesson with your
students.
Please put an X on the line before each item as you complete it to ensure your submission is
complete.
Attendance on the final day includes completing the lesson plan, using the template provided;
completing the collection tool; finishing the student sample; and creating the assessment
rubric.
Grades are S (satisfactory) or U (unsatisfactory.
Participants’ final assignments will be evaluated by the facilitators for completeness, clarity,
and for revision according to suggestions from peer reviewers/facilitators.
