8th Grade SpringBoard Embedded Assessment 1.2 :
Jonas’s Hero Journey
Assignment:
Your assignment is to create a visual representation, in the form of a graphic
novel(story board), connecting events from the text, The Giver, to stages and
steps of a hero’s journey. Your visual representation should include 6-8
scenes/panels that include images and text (drawings, quotes, details,
and examples) to graphically represent events from Jonas’s journey
away from the community to Elsewhere.
Steps:
1. Connect Jonas’s journey to the 10 hero’s journey steps by completing
the hero’s journey (rough draft) CHART. Use your notes from p. 27-29
to help you complete the chart. Identify at least two steps in each stage
of the hero’s journey for your graphic novel.
2. On posterboard: Create a STORYBOARD for Jonas’s journey that
consists of 6-8 scenes (one panel per step)( do at least 6 panels for a C,
7 panels for a B, and 8 panels for an A, quality of work is required).
Make sure that your graphics/illustrations correctly represent the steps
of the hero’s journey. Use color, framing, and angles to enhance the
meaning of each panel or scene.
3. A) Each scene/panel should use text boxes to explain HOW the event
represents that STEP in the hero’s journey.
B) Each scene/panel should include at least one dialogue balloon
with relevant and accurate QUOTES from the novel to explain the step
of the hero’s journey stage.
C) Each scene/panel should explain your use of framing, angles, and
lighting (or color) --- explain how they emphasize the point you want
to make in your scene.
4. Clearly label/title each panel with the specific HERO JOURNEY step
represented in the hero’s journey.
5. Create a title for your graphic novel.
