PARKS & NATURAL HERITAGE PLANNING INTERN

Planning & Regulatory Services Department

May 2016 – September 2016

Reporting to the Manager of Park and Natural Heritage Planning, the successful candidate will work in both the office and field to assist the Park and Natural Heritage Planning Section with administration of the Town’s Tree

Preservation By-law and review of development applications. With respect to the Tree Preservation By-law, the

Intern will be responsible for logging and tracking permit applications, conducting inspections, and assisting residents with the application process. To assist with the processing of development applications, the successful applicant will review landscape plan re-submissions to confirm revisions, and conduct inspections to verify installation of tree protection measures and required landscaping. The intern will also assist the section with file and database management, coordination of public engagement activities, and analysis of public survey data.

 Currently enrolled in a college or university program working towards a university degree in landscape architecture, arboriculture/forestry, environmental science, geography or planning

 Ability to accurately identify tree / plant species and undertake basic assessments of plant health and condition

Understanding of Ontario environmental and planning legislation

Experience conducting site investigations and collecting data

 Knowledge of municipal government processes and organization

Effective verbal and written communication skills are essential

Strong working knowledge of spreadsheet, database, word processing and presentation programs

GIS, graphic design and/or text editing skills will be seen as an asset

Valid Ontario Class ‘G’ driver’s license

RATE OF PAY: $15.50 to $18.00/ hour
