EAP 1600 - Speech/Listening Level 6
Course Description: Students further develop communication
skills necessary for full participation in mainstream college
classrooms including comprehension of extensive discourse.
3 credits
Prerequisites: EAP 1500 or equivalent proficiency
Co-requisites: EAP 1600L
PRODUCTION
Competency 1: The student will use grammatical structures
consistent with levels 1-6.
Competency 2: Most mainstream listeners in social, professional and
academic situations will understand the student.
Competency 3: The student will use supra-segmental (e.g., rhythm,
stress, intonation) and extra linguistic features to convey precise
meaning.
Competency 4: The student will use formal and informal language
(persuasion, negotiation, debate, etc.) tailored to specific audiences
and contextual settings.
COMPREHENSION
Competency 5: The student will be able to comprehend, analyze,
synthesize and summarize extensive discourse.
Competency 6: The student will be able to take notes during
academic lectures.
Competency 7: The student will be able to adjust listening strategies
according to the complexity and content of the task at hand.
Competency 8: The student will demonstrate the following analytical
listening skills:
a.
Distinguish fact and opinion.
b.
Evaluate the credibility and argumentation of the speech.
c.
Interpret a speaker’s purpose, point of view, tone, or use of
figurative language.
Course Requirements:
In addition to your class time, you are required to attend lab class .
Example: read a pre-approved book and write a short review; take dictation from 5
audio-books; prepare an oral presentation; etc.
Important reminder for speech lab classes: your students are required to put in 16
extra hours of independent work in the lab each semester). *See Speech lab materials
available in lab.
Attendance Policy: You should come to every class in order to obtain the most
complete educational experience. Participation in this class is only possible if you attend
class.
Absences: Students may be absent from one class with no penalties. Students who are
absent __3__ times will see their final grade lowered by one letter grade. Students who
are absent _6___ times will see their final grade lowered by two letter grades. Students
who are absent __7__ or more times will be asked to drop the class, or the instructor will
drop them or assign a grade of “F”. I CANNOT STRESS ATTENDANCE ENOUGH.
Tardiness: If you are late, please enter quietly and join in the class activities. For every
_3__ times that you arrive late or depart early, this will count as one absence.
Exceptions may be made if you provide documentation which demonstrates that you had
a serious illness, injury or court appearance. (Note: reword this to fit your own
preferences.)
Course Policies:

drink, laughing at other students, talking out of turn). None of the above.

Academic dishonesty: The department affirms its commitment to treat cases of
academic dishonesty according to Miami-Dade Community College Procedure No. 4074.
Students are forewarned that academic dishonesty in any form will be penalized
according to this procedure. The instructor has the option to award a grade of “F” for the
course. Cheating or any form of academic dishonesty may also result in the student’s
being placed on academic probation, suspended from school, or dismissed from the

Tutoring is available in the lab in room 6237 for students who have a paid registration to
use the lab.
Tentative Class Schedule: There are no scheduled tests but quizzes may occur at any
time. Each week one chapter will be covered in class. Participation is required as is
preparation including assignment reports. Your classroom participation should be
considered a quiz on a weekly basis.

ONE UNIT PER WEEK WITH TIME TO REVIEW AT END OF TERM. THE BOOK
IS THE PROMPTER FOR THE CLASS ACTIVITIES IN WHICH YOU MUST
PRODUCE ORAL STATEMENTS REFLECTING MASTERY OF LEVEL 5 AND 6
SENTENCE STRUCTURES.
