Mrs. Covington’s Third Grade News
A note from the teacher:
Permission slips and the $7.00 fee for our trip to the
Panthers’ Stadium are due by this Thursday, October 8th.
Please be sure to mark if your child will be bringing a lunch
from home or will need to order one from the cafeteria.
Also, please turn in the parent/teacher conference sign-up
sheet as soon as possible. Thanks so much.
Week of October 5th
“6 Minute Solution” (Fluency Program)
Learning Targets this Week:
Math: * I can draw a scaled bar graph to represent given data with
several categories.
*I can answer one-step problems using information from scaled bar
graphs. (3.MD.3)
Example:
Analyze and Interpret data:











How many more nonfiction books where read than fantasy books?
Did more people read biography and mystery books or fiction and
fantasy books?
About how many books in all genres were read?
Using the data from the graphs, what type of book was read more
often than a mystery but less often than a fairytale?
What interval was used for this scale?
What can we say about types of books read? What is a typical type
of book read? (beyond standard)
If you were to purchase a book for the class library which would be
the best genre? Why?
Literacy:
*I can explain how specific aspects of a text’s illustrations
contribute to what is conveyed by the words in a story
(e.g., create mood, emphasize aspects of a character or
setting). (3.RL.7)
Over the next few weeks I will implement a
reading fluency program titled, “Six Minute
Solution.” The program gives every child an
opportunity to practice and improve their
reading fluency (speed). Students will be reading
passages with a partner and tracking the number
of words they can read (from a 3rd grade
passage) in one minute. When students can read
fluently, their comprehension improves. Third
graders should be reading 70 or more words a
minute at this point in the year. Your child’s
individual score will be discussed at our parent/
teacher conference.
October 9th and 23rd : Hat Day ($1 donation)
October 21st: Early Release Day
October 23rd: Boo Bash (5-8pm)
October 30th: Teacher Workday/ Parent
Conferences
Vocabulary Words this Week: ornery, devotion, respectable
Review: soaring, thrust, flickering, difficult, disturb, amuse, privacy
*Encourage your child to use these words in every day conversations. 
Test corrections are only to be completed at
school and test papers should not come
home until final score has been calculated.
Students will no longer be able to make
corrections after 1st Quarter.
