Weather Vocabulary
1. insolation – amount of the sun’s energy that reaches the earth
2. atmosphere – the air that surrounds the earth
3. troposphere – layer of the atmosphere closest to the earth’s surface
4. air pressure – force put on a given area by the weight of the air above it
5. weather – what the troposphere is like at any given moment
6. barometer – instrument used to measure air pressure
7. water vapor – water in the air, form of a gas
8. humidity – amount of water vapor in the air
9. evaporation – the changing of a liquid into a gas
10.condensation – the changing of a gas into a liquid
11.relative humidity – comparison between how much water vapor is in the air and how
much it can hold
12.stratus clouds – blanket like layers, spread out
13.fog – a (stratus) cloud at ground level
14.cumulus cloud – puffy cloud the rises up from a flat bottom
15. cirrus cloud – high level wispy feather like clouds made of ice crystals
16.precipitation – any form of water particles that fall from the atmosphere to the ground
17. wind – the horizontal movement of air
18.convection cell – part of the atmosphere where air moves in a circular pattern
19.sea breeze – wind that blows from the sea to the land
20.land breeze – a breeze that blows from the land to the sea
21.Coriolis effect – wind the will always curve to the right in the Northern Hemisphere
and curve to the left in the Southern Hemisphere
22.isobar – line of a map connecting places with equal air pressure
