Course Title: English 11
Course Description: Instruction is aligned with the Virginia SOL to reinforce and extend students’ skills in
writing, reading, and speaking. The writing of essays, real world documents, and research
products encourages improvement in specific composing skills. Students review mechanics,
usage, and elements of sentence structure in order to increase their effectiveness in writing and
speaking. Students study American literature through a survey of the major literary periods and
authors. Students improve their vocabulary through the study of words encountered during
reading and content presentations. Students improve their speaking skills through various
individual and group assignments. Teachers incorporate activities to prepare students for the
Grade 11 SOL reading and writing tests.
Learning Expectations:
The student will:








Construct writing with an emphasis on persuasion and argumentation.
Apply knowledge of derivations, connotation, and denotation to extend vocabulary.
Read, comprehend, and analyze relationships among American literature, history, and culture.
Read and analyze a variety of nonfiction texts.
Make informative and persuasive presentations.
Examine how values and points of view are included or excluded, and how media influences
beliefs and behaviors.
Self- and peer-edit writing with correct grammar, punctuation, spelling, sentence structure, and
paragraphing.
Analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and organize information from a variety of sources to produce a
research product.
Grading:
Formative: 0%
These include, but are not limited to, classwork, practice exercises, journaling, binder
checks, homework, and rough drafts.
Summative: 100%
These include, but are not limited to, compositions, tests, projects, quizzes,
presentations.
Late Work –
Graded assignments which are late:
For every class an assignment is late, the assignment will lose 10% of the grade.
Example: If a student earns 40 points out of 50 points on an assignment but turns the
assignment in late, the student can only earn a 35.
If the assignment is not turned in by the fourth class after it is due, I will contact the
parents.
Re-Dos
Occasionally, a student may need to re-do an assignment. I will allow this to happen with my
permission. The criteria will be my judgment based on student effort, the grade on the
assignment, and the student’s explanation of why she or he should be granted a re-do.
Phoenix
Grades will be posted in Phoenix. Once the parent portal is open, parents can access grades
through it. The grades will be posted within 10 school days of collection of the assignment.
Essay grades may be posted up to 15 school days after collection.
Expectations
Required materials
 A binder or multi-pocket file folder to hold student work and handouts.
 Loose leaf paper
 Pens (black or blue)
Follow the Rules
 Arrive prepared
 Be polite and pay attention
 Remain on task
 Keep all assignments, notes, and handouts unless told otherwise. You will need them for your
exams.
 Cell phones and other personal technology are not to be seen in class (that includes earbuds)
without permission.
 Personal grooming is for home and the bathroom, not my class
 Involve yourself in your education.
Assignments
All assignments should:
o Be completed in blue or black ink, pencil, or typed, depending on the assignment’s
directions.
o Have your name, class with period, and date in the top left hand corner
Attendance
It is expected that you will not miss class. If you do, it is your responsibility to check my website
and find out the homework; plus, see me for any handouts/assignments you may have missed.

 The Crucible, Miller
 The Things They Carried, O'Brien,
 A Raisin in the Sun, Hansberry
 A novel to be determined later
 A goal of one or more independent novels each quarter
 A variety of readings from other sources and the textbook – The Language of
Literature: American Literature, McDougal Littell
 which will be essays, poetry, short stories, and excerpts from novels
Expect to read both in class and out of class
Novel and play readings may change in response to the needs of the class
