Innovation Showcase Presentation Daily 5 for 4th Grade December 11, 2013 1. Getting Started: a. Start with Daily 5, get it running before starting CAFÉ b. Establish rules and guidelines c. Each student needs a Reading Binder and a book box. d. Start with 2 or 3 of the components, Read to Self and Listen to Reading, maybe Word Work Training is essential!!! e. Instruct students using the I-Chart (anchor charts)for each component *I made permanent charts the first year and laminated. As you teach each component, make a chart with the students using your Smart Board or poster board. I have students copy these and keep in their Reading Binder. e. Practice each component for a couple of days individually before doing multiple groups. # of days depends on the ability of the kids. f. “Stay out of the way!” page 25 in the Daily 5 2. Systems needed: p. 42 in book a. Daily Check in or sign in for students b. Binder checking c. Turning work in d. Scheduling/Requirements 3. Running multiple components: a. Students must work independently, and understand that they cannot interrupt small group activities. b. Teacher is free to work with small groups or individuals c. Guided Reading occurs during this time d. Use of bell/signal to switch activities e. Switch at will, when finished with activity **watch read to self** 4. Student Responsibilities: a. Book box (binder, reading books, writing journals, Storyworks) b. Materials needed for working c. Recording system – sign in sheet kept in binder d. Time management – completion requirements e. Turning in work – centrally located basket f. AIG students – DEP work 5. Teacher responsibilities: PATIENCE!!!!! a. Binder check (1-2 times/month) b. Work checked c. Monitor students working d. Guided reading – group using baseline, PA, CARS test e. Individual instruction f. Grades – page 97 in book 6. Trouble Shooting a. What if kids “can’t” do it? More practice, simplify requirements, individual help b. Time management/Scheduling c. Organization – start small and simple 7. C.A.F.E.: I don’t use this “board” in 4th grade. These skills are taught/reviewed in small and whole group sessions. *Very good strategies!!! Planning & Activities: 1. Plan activities in Daily 5 components around the themes and topics you are teaching, including Math. 2. Alternate days for Daily 5 (sample schedule) 7:30-9:00am Monday – whole class lesson Writing and LA Tuesday – Daily 5 w/ guided reading Wednesday – whole class lesson Reading (focus lessons) Thursday – Daily 5 w/ guided reading Friday - Daily 5 w/guided reading 3. Post a Daily 5 schedule each week on your Reading board Some components are planned, with one or two free choices 4. Teach kids to be responsible for “signing in” 5.
