1. Causes of the Great Depression-refer to your SOLs and notes
a. People overspeculated, using borrowed money that they could not repay causing the stock market to crash
b. The Federal Reserve failed to prevent the collapse of the banking system
c. High trade taxes (tariffs) strangled (slowed) international trade, which hurt American businesses
d. The severe drought/Dust Bowl caused more farms to fail
2. Effects of the Great Depression-refer to your SOLs and notes
a. A large number of banks and businesses failed
b. One-fourth of workers were unemployed
c. Large numbers of people were hungry and homeless
d. Farmers’ incomes fell to low levels because of the drought.
3. The SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) regulates the stock market
4. The CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) was a federal work program that employed young men to plant trees and build
bridges.
5. Social Security provides money for the elderly called a pension as well as money for the unemployed and disabled.
6. The AAA (Agricultural Adjustment Act) was a farm assistance program that paid farmers to NOT grow certain crops.
This would decrease the supply which would eventually cause the price to go up.
7. The TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority) was an environmental improvement program that built dams to provide an
affordable source of electric power to seven southern states.
8. The FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation) insures bank deposits.
9. Hoovervilles-The shantytowns during the Great Depression made out of boxes, scrap wood, etc. that many homeless
Americans lived in.
10. Dust Bowl- The name given to the area of the southern Great Plains that suffered from a lack of rain and dust storms
for ten years
11. stock-shares of ownership in a company which can be bought or sold for money
12. subsidy-money the government gives to a person or company so that they will eventually help others (farmers get
subsidies)
13. credit/on margin-a type of loan; borrowing money that will be paid back later with interest
14. default-to not do something you were supposed to do (for ex. Usually refers to money; Paying a bill or loan).
15. Federal Reserve-a federal agency that regulates and makes rules for banks.
