Objective : Students will research, organize and present the characteristics of a modern day country.

S.O.L. Objective:
12.14 Compare the United States political and economic systems with those of major democratic and
authoritarian nations, in terms of
 the structures and powers of political institutions
 the rights and powers of political institutions
 economic goals and institutions and the role of government in the economy
 the relationship between economic freedom and political freedom
 the allocation of resources and its impact on productivity
Now that students are well versed in the styles and theories of government, we will apply our knowledge to the countries and
governments of today’s world. After choosing a country of interest, students will prepare a presentation of no more than ten minutes.
The presentation should include the following:
Groups:
 Students will be working in groups of three on this project.
 Groups will be assigned a country by Mr. Maher. Groups will be
allowed to trade countries only with the permission of the teacher.
Part I: Presentation (25 points)
 Students will learn the basics of PowerPoint and various other presentation formats
in class.
 Students will create a seven to ten minute presentation. The presentation must
include but is not limited to the following information: (8 to 15 slides)
 Structure and Type of government – type of government, current
leaders, judicial system, and how country was founded. (2-3 slides)
 Advantages and disadvantages of this style government
 Economic System – natural resources, economic centers, economic
potential, important trade relations. (2-3 slides)
Identify how this country fits into the ‘global economy’
 Social/ Cultural Characteristics – population, language, religion, law
and social order or class structure, role and amount of participation
citizens have in the government. (2-3 slides)
Explain how the government influences social/ cultural
characteristics
 Current Events – significant news, accomplishments or conflicts. (23 slides)
 Symbolism – does the country have an official symbol or emblem?
What do you think would be an appropriate symbol for the country.
(2-3 slides)
Part II: Leadership (25 points)
Choose three current leaders of the government : (PowerPoint or similar)



Include picture of leader
Description of office and duties
Years in office (term of office)
Part III: Kahoot!! (25 points)
10 Questions (answers must be provided in one of your presentations)
