Tolbert Elementary
Math
For the months of February and March we are learning geometry,
fractions, and place value. We are continually reviewing addition and
subtraction facts. By this point in the school year your child should be
successful with completing 30 addition and subtraction facts through 10 in
3 minutes. To check your child’s progress, please make sure to look in
his/her red take home folder.
Content
In social studies, we are learning about famous Americans, American
symbols, Black History Month, and Presidents’ Day.
In science, we will be learning about matter and motion. We will be
completing several STEM activities.
Literacy
In reading we continue to use poetry to focus on fluency skills. During read
alouds we are focusing on comprehension strategies, such as character
traits, mental images, and point of view.
In writing, we are completing our unit on non-fiction writing. We will also
work on letter writing and story writing. At this point in the school year your
child should be able to write a complete sentence with correct
capitalization and punctuation. He/she should be spelling sight words
correctly as well as stretching the sounds of unknown words. Additionally, it
is expected that by the end of the quarter each child is able to
independently write 3 sentences that focus on a topic.
How you can help your child at home
1. Review word wall words. (They are listed on your child’s homework
sheet.)
2. Read for 15-20 minutes every night. RAZ kids is a great resource!
3. Practice math facts.
4. Review papers sent home with your child to reinforce learning.
5. Practice tying shoes and zipping/fastening coats.
