CHARTER
A WRITTEN LIST OF RIGHTS
GRANTED BY A
GOVERNMENT OR RULER.
COUNCIL
A group that makes rules and
decisions.
COLONY
A land that is settled far from
the country that governs it.
VIRGINIA COMPANY OF
LONDON
A group of wealthy people that
formed a company to start a new
colony, the colony of Virginia.
JAMES I
England’s new king that granted a
charter to the Virginia Company in
June 1606.
CAPTAIN CHRISTOPHER
NEWPORT
Commanded the Virginia Company's
voyage to Jamestown in 1606.
JAMESTOWN
The first permanent English
settlement in North America in 1607
on the James River, named James
Fort in honor of King James
*this site was selected because they thought it
could easily be defended,had plenty of fresh
water, and no Powhatan appeared to be using
the land.
CAPTAIN JOHN SMITH
Soldier, mapmaker, adventurer,
and writer. A Virginia Council
member, who was also an
experienced soldier. He taught
the colonists how to protect and
provide for themselves.
