Instructions for Mapping to the File Service on COB184

Fall 2003, MSU College of Business

The microcomputer installed in Reid 451 serves as a secure data storage site. College of Business personnel can map their computers to this machine for secure data backup and access. Each individual in the college has a unique share on COB184 that is accessible to that single individual only. In addition there is a pccommon set up on COB184 that is accessible to all COB personnel, but not to anyone else. Using pccommon you can exchange files with other COB personnel. COB184 is running Windows Server 2003 which is an NT based, secure operating system.

Follow these instructions to map to COB184.

1.

Mapping to your personal drive –

Right click on My Computer and select Map Network Drive .

Choose a drive designator from the drop-down menu , preferably p: (any letter will do, but as a default we will use p: when making references to this personal drive).

Type the path as shown below:

\\COB184\Firstname Lastname$

For example if your name was Mary Smith you would use:

\\COB184\Mary Smith$ as the path to your p: drive. Click OK .

2.

Map to the college pccommon using the same instructions as 1. using any letter that you choose (the college default choice will be drive q:) and the path as shown:

\\COB184\pccommon$

The main purposes of the personal folder (p: drive) are to give you a place to back up your personal folders, and to give you classroom access to your files.

1.

To back up your personal work simple copy the folders from your c: drive to your p: drive. Windows includes a backup wizard for this process which is accessed through the standard program access. Using the start button select: programs – accessories – system tools – backup. When prompted select backup selected files. You will see a diagram of the files on your computer. Check the My Documents box directly on the desktop. (This shortcut links to your files under documents and settings and includes all files that you’ve saved under My Documents as well as all of your personal settings from any Microsoft products – Office,

Outlook, IE, etc. including any personal folders in Outlook) If you use Netscape you should save your user profile from Netscape. The user profile for Netscape is located in: my computer - c: - program files – netscape – users – yourname (or default if the profile wasn’t named). Check the box next to default

(yourname). Then select your p: drive by browsing in the dialog as the destination where you want to back up your files. If you spend a few minutes investigating the various advanced options you can set up a scheduled backup that will occur periodically (at least weekly) without any further input from you.

2.

To access files in the classroom (or from any networked computer on campus), attach the cart to the network connection (already connected in the podiums and 302). Log in to the MSU domain (three boxes: username, password, domain). The MSU domain will know it is you at the machine and will allow you to map to

COB184. Follow the instructions above to map to your personal folder (P: drive).
