It has been an amazing four
years watching the current
graduating senior class. They
went from unsure and
unprepared freshman to
young adults that are ready
to take on the world. The
“Class of 2011” has a variety
of career goals such as;
veterinarian technician,
nursing, commercial drawing,
military, welding, pilot
license, and working within
the justice system. The
Navigation 101 advisory
program and GEAR UP have
been an intricate part of
helping these students along
the way to achieve their
goals. GEAR UP has given
students opportunities to visit
college campuses all across
the state while exposing them to
a wide variety of careers
through job fairs and other
special events. I am truly proud
of these students as they make
their final preparations for their
1st year after high school. They
have been busy filling out
applications for college,
completing financial aid forms
and working on scholarship
applications. 95% of the class
has made post secondary
application to a two year, four
year college, trade school,
military, or apprenticeship. 87%
of the students that have
applied to these five areas have
already been accepted! This is
exciting as our GEAR UP goal
is to have 100% application for
this year’s senior class.

Seniors pictured above are Connor Thompson, Diana Alcantara,
Elizabeth Placencio and Pablo Antonio. Each has a plan that has
been implemented for their 1st year after high school. These
students have been great help to the GEAR UP afterschool
program as they have been tutors and excellent role models for
your students.

LIGO Hanford Observatory
Located in the Columbia Basin
region of southeastern
Washington. LIGO, the Laser
Interferometer Gravitationalwave Observatory, seeks to
detect gravitational waves -ripples in the fabric of
spacetime. First predicted by
Einstein in his theory of
general relativity, gravitational
waves are produced by exotic
events involving black holes,
neutron stars and objects
perhaps not yet discovered.
Dale Ingram will be doing a
math-in-science program this
year.

Oroville Seniors on Thursday January
13th had a chance to get help with filling
out Free Application for Federal Student

scholarship forms. This is the second
time GEAR UP along with the High
School counseling office have had
evening workshop sessions to help
Seniors and their parents file for FAFSA,
scholarships and other college
applications.
There were about twenty seniors and
parents who attended this second
workshop.
There will be another workshop in
March.
