2009 Commissioning Tasks for the LTU/FEL Run

Feb. 26, 2009

Goal #1: Commission LTU, Undulator, Dump , and FEE

Goal #2: Measure and Optimize SASE FEL power at 15 Å and below

Goal #3: Setup machine for AMO experiments in August 2009 (30 Hz)

Goal #4: Finish laser-heater commissioning & evaluate µ-bunching damping

Dates: Install one undulator on Jan. 28.

Hoobler).

3.

Calibrate all BPM TMITs wrt toroids and injector (J. Turner working with S.

Smith and S. Hoobler).

4.

Steer LTU and dump trajectory to below ±0.3 mm in x and y paying attention to strong corrector settings, large BPM readings, and backwards BPMs or correctors

(R. Iverson, PE).

5.

Study 4.3-GeV focusing problem (50Q1-3 & Q5, Q6, and QA0 polynomials?) (R.

Iverson).

6.

Complete RP tests as necessary (e.g., 4.3-GeV tests?) (R. Iverson).

7.

Setup laser-heater undulator K -control PV (PE, H. Loos).

8.

Steer undulator trajectory to below ±0.1 mm in x and y paying attention to strong corrector settings, large BPM readings, and backwards BPMs or correctors (H.-D.

Nuhn, H. Loos).

9.

Launch oscillations starting in BSY and all through LTU to verify all BPMs respond properly, correctors are in right locations with proper polarities and planes, and to also verify model. (F.-J. Decker, PE).

10.

Scan energy ±1% and measure BPMDL1-X, BPMDL3-X, BPMQD-Y, and

BPMDD-Y to verify approximate dispersion and proper energy-BPM operation.

(F.-J. Decker, PE).

11.

Measure and correct DL2 x -dispersion (F.-J. Decker, PE).

12.

Setup full 6×6 longitudinal feedback (J. Wu, J. Frisch, D. Fairley).

13.

Test and release new LEM (Woodley, Iverson).

14.

Checkout all four LTU wire-scanners – scales correct, adequate signal, PMT timing, decent profile, controls function OK, excessive jitter or vibration, emittance software, etc (H. Loos, R. Iverson).

15.

Test and release new LTU matching software and match beam with QEM1-4 (H.

Loos, J. Turner).

16.

Checkout OTR30, OTR33, and OTRDMP – scale correct, adequate light, decent image, controls function OK, resolution, alignment, etc (H. Loos).

17.

Measure slice emittance on OTR33 (H. Loos, F-J. Decker).

18.

Measure slice energy spread on OTR30 (H. Loos, F-J. Decker).

19.

Measure projected energy spread and energy distribution on OTRDMP (H. Loos,

F-J. Decker).

20.

Try to measure longitudinal wakefield in undulator by looking at OTRDMP beam distribution (A. Novokhatski, J, Wu).

21.

Commission undulator BLM’s, including MPS trip levels (A. Fisher, C. Field, D.

McCormick, H.-D. Nuhn).

22.

Setup launch feedback in LTU – see PRD 1.1-304, Table 1, Item #10. (J. Wu, D.

Fairley).

23.

Checkout and setup two energy, two x, and two y LTU collimators (see PRD 1.3-

017, Table 2, for gap settings). Verify beam is reasonably centered (J. Turner).

24.

Launch oscillations through undulator using each of 33 XCORs and YCORs and verify BPMs, correctors, and model (H.-D. Nuhn).

25.

Launch oscillations through undulator using each of 33 quadrupole motions in x and y and verify quad motions, BPMs, and model (H.-D. Nuhn).

26.

Checkout and verify all controlled motions of each of 33 undulator girders – with at least one undulator installed (J. Welch, H.-D. Nuhn).

27.

Run trials of BBA for undulator and attempt to align quads and BPMs (H. Loos,

H.-D. Nuhn, PE).

28.

Pop in each of 33 BFW’s and find beam in x and y, eventually leaving undulator at each “found” location. As lower priority, use data to measure beam size and calculate emittance (H. Loos, H.-D. Nuhn).

29.

Finish laser heater commissioning and launch µ-bunching study (PE and all).

30.
