Custodian Supervisor 2
Job Code: 8777 – Contract Classified
Department Introduction:
Building Services delivers Custodial Services to the UW campus that provides exceptionally clean and sanitary
environments for students, faculty, staff, and visitors and manages the comprehensive Recycling & Solid Waste
Management program.
Job Purpose:
This individual will supervise a staff of at least 30 custodians, train subordinates and perform administrative
responsibilities such as recommending supply levels, staffing levels, staff training requirements, and department policies
and procedures.
Duties and Responsibilities:
 Under general direction, serve as a first-line supervisor in a custodial department
 With delegated authority, interview and recommend selection of applicants, conduct training, assign and schedule
work, act upon leave requests, conduct annual performance evaluations and recommend disciplinary action
 Determine staffing needs of assigned buildings; analyze workloads and assign work to employees
 Assign building keys to custodial staff and maintain key security
 Maintain compliance with applicable policies and procedures
 Inspect buildings to determine cleaning needs and job assignments
 Prepare reports related to custodial services, such as building inventories and custodial procedures
 Oversee performance of special cleaning projects
 Carry cell phone to maintain communications
 Ensure that power-cleaning equipment is maintained in proper working order
 Identify, report, and take corrective action to resolve maintenance problems; report and act upon building security
and potential safety hazards
 Evaluate, order inventory, and maintain stock of custodial supplies; recommend equipment needs
 Maintain time reports and leave records; maintain a record of employees' job performance
 Conduct safety meetings and train subordinates; enforce safety rules and regulations; investigate accidents, and
fill out accident reports
 Meet with customers and clients to address cleaning concerns and provide information
 Attend department meetings and training as required
 Perform other duties as assigned

Required Skills, Experience and Knowledge:
 Three years of experience in custodial or general maintenance work, including two years of experience as a
Custodian Supervisor 1
 Proven strong organizational and problem-solving skills, including the ability to make sound decisions, prioritize
tasks and meet deadlines with demonstrated flexibility to meet changing needs

Strong supervisory and people management skills with a demonstrated commitment to build and maintain a
strong team and customer service oriented organization
Excellent oral and written communication skills, including those required to create reports, conduct meetings, and
train personnel as well as the ability to work well with others
Experience inspecting buildings to determine cleaning needs and analyzing workloads
Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team
Computer proficiency using Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel as well as data entry experience
Demonstrated ability to work in a culturally diverse environment with demonstrated flexibility and composure
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal
requirements, such as a license/certification/registration
Have knowledge and understand of safe work practices and policies
Must be able to wear all proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required
Must be able to follow written and/or verbal instructions and communicate in English regarding the use of
chemicals, supplies, and equipment; comply with safety policies and procedures
Desirable Skills, Experience and Knowledge:
 Experience supervising custodial services staff in a large institution
 Demonstrated experience contributing information to the determination of a fixed budget
 Experience with Balanced Scorecard and Lean processes
Conditions of Employment:
 Valid Washington State Driver’s License
 A satisfactory outcome from a criminal background verification will be required prior to hire
