Please write a 500-word personal statement in response to the following question and attach your
statement to this form (please type). Note: Given the highly competitive nature of the application
process for this scholarship, we strongly urge you to be artfully compelling and thoughtful in your
response, illustrating the qualities and experiences that set you apart.
How have your studies in English as a major distinctly shaped the way you see the world, make
meaning of it, and express these ideas to yourself and others? You might consider isolating a
key idea, principle, or practice gleaned about literary analysis, writing practices, or a particular
writer or genre to help you illustrate what you think makes English study a worthy endeavor.
Feel free to take license with form and to play with voice to deliver your ideas with freshness
and novelty.
