A Rube Goldberg Device

Purpose

The purpose of our device is to roll a pair of dice.

How it works…

 A water cup and a cup of sugar are sitting on opposite ends of a see-saw.

 They are filled so that the water cup weighs more.

 We begin by uncovering a hole in a cup of water.

 As the cup of water empties, it gets lighter.

How it works…

 The sugar side of the see-saw falls.

 The wire under the see-saw connects to the metal plate on the pizza box and completes the circuit.

How it works…

 The completed circuit is attached to a length of fishing line.

 The copper wire heats up, which burns through the fishing line.

How it works…

 The tension in the string is released, which causes the cup to fall.

 The dice spill out of the cup, and are rolled!

Energy Conversions

 Gravity – potential to kinetic

 Chemical/heat

 Gravity – potential to kinetic

Conclusions

 Our group worked well together

 We ran into a few problems, but through brainstorming and teamwork we were easily able to solve them.
