Retirees Club Minutes for Tuesday, January 13, 2015
The club met on Tuesday, January 13, 2015, in Room 102B of the Maverick Activity Center (MAC).
Beginning at 10am everyone gathered for a meet and greet with refreshments. At 11am Rita Thompson,
club president, welcomed everyone on this cold day. She introduced Frank Gault. Frank introduced our
speaker Judy Shannon, Director of Agency Relations Volunteer Center of North Texas. The center has
two locations (4137 Stadium Drive, Fort Worth, TX 76133 and 2800 Live Oak Street, Dallas, TX 75204).
Contact Judy by phone: (817) 927-7172 Ext. 237 or fax: (817) 927-3280; e-mail: jshannon@vcnt.org.
Judy told about her personal situation with volunteering and went on to discuss what is volunteering
and how do you fit in. She suggested the guidelines of 40 hours per year divided between two
organizations. The benefits of volunteering include getting healthier, meeting new people, learning new
skills and giving back whether you volunteer on a one time basis or an on-going basis. Her challenge to
our group is for everyone to give at least 15 hours of volunteer time this year. Her job challenge is to
increase volunteerism by 30%. She said to find the thing you are passionate about as a guide to choosing
a place to volunteer.
Judy presented a handout from the Volunteer Center of North Texas that outlines the web site voly.org.
On this web site you can “Create an Account”; view all the opportunities for volunteering either
individually or on a team; then volunteer. Volunteers must undergo a background check before they are
accepted. The government has made this process available to the Volunteer Center at a reduced rate.
Members offered personal experiences and asked questions. Using visual aids, Judy presented a guided
tour of the web site voly.org.
At the end of the presentation, Rita thanked Judy and presented her with a small gift. Rita announced
that the winter luncheon would be February 10th and that invitations would soon be mailed out. She also
announced the passing of several retirees Calvin Lloyd Reimer, Barbara Jeanne Butler Hibbard (president of
the Retirees Club in 2000), Betty Ann Nedderman and Dr. Joseph Jerry Stanovsky.
