IGDS SHORT COURSE JULY 2015
LOOKING IN: LOOKING OUT
Gender in the News
with
Dr. Sue Ann Barratt
One Day | Tuesday 28 July 2015 | 9:00-5:00 P.M. | IGDS Seminar Room, The UWI, St. Augustine
About the short course
This course is designed to enhance the level of
gender consciousness in news media products.
Through discussion and interrogation of select
published articles, it helps journalists to hone
their analytical and writing skills. Journalists are
able to reflect on the representation of gender
issues, the accuracy of such representations and
strategies to be used to avoid misrepresentations
which often are the result of sensationalist texts
designed to increase sales. At the end of the
workshop participants should be able to identify
and evaluate gender identities and issues within a
context or text and produce texts which are not
only accurate but do not bias or damage any
gender.
research on Social media in the Caribbean,
Cultural Studies particularly Trinidad and Tobago
Carnival, Body Image and Identity, and the use of
Sexist and Non-Sexist Language.
Why should I take this course?
This workshop targets working print journalists
especially. However, broadcast and other
journalists are welcome. It enables you,
through reflexive analysis, to evaluate your
writing not only for its adherence to journalistic
standards but its professional and non-sexist
approach to gender issues. You will enhance
the level of gender consciousness in your writing
especially as you work in a space and place
constantly negotiating changing gender norms
and practices.
