Figurative Language – language that was written to create a special effect,
not taken literally.
Simile – comparing 2 things using like, as, than. Ex. She is like a rose.
Metaphor – comparing 2 things not using like, as, than. Ex. She is rose
Onomatopoeia – words whose sounds express or suggest their meaning.
Personification – giving human characteristics to animals or objects.
Imagery – words that appeal to one of the five senses.
Hyperbole – an extreme exaggeration.
Ex. I’m so hungry, I could eat a horse.
Alliteration – repetition of the first consonant sounds in words.
Ex. sneaky Sally, The baby boy’s name is Bobby.
Assonance – repetiton of vowel sounds within words or syllables.
Ex. moon, bloom
Allusion – an implied or indirect reference in literature to a familiar person,
place, or event.
Idiom – an expression that can not be taken literally. Ex. Eat your words.
