powerful barrier to westward expansion

attacked & killed the men defending an
English trading post in the Ohio valley



Religious Tensions
The Great Awakening
 1730’s & 1740’s- Congregationalists led a
series of revivals designed to renew
religious enthusiasm & commitment
 Sought to remind people of the power of
God & the authority of ministers

Energized people to speak for
themselves & to rely less on the
traditional authority of ministers &
books
 Ministers preached that any Christian
could have a personal relationships
with Christ

Churches reorganize
New England change to Baptist
 Southern Baptist & Methodist
 Celebration of ordinary people
 Drew people at the middle or
bottom of colonial society

Great Awakening had long term
social & political affects
 Attacked the idea that some
people are better than others
 Many denominations split

