Directions:
Answer the fill-in questions below:
A--General Participation
1. How many hours of study have you done outside of class per week?_____
The expectation for this class is two times the number of credits—approximately 20.
2. How many classes have you missed as of today? ______
More than three borders on minimum acceptable to pass, so plan to meet with instructors if you have
missed more than three classes.
B.--Seminar
3. What percentage of reading have you completed on time for seminar discussions?____
100% is minimum expectation for 3.0 or higher; 80% = not more than 2.5; 70% not more than 2.0.
4. What is the number of seminar preparation writing assignments you have completed and were
ready for class?
100% is minimum expectation for 3.0 or higher; less 90% = not more than 3.4; 80% = not
more than 2.9; 70% = not more than 2.0).
5. What grade would you give yourself for your seminar skills and participation? Use the
“What’s in a Seminar” hand-out on the BLOG and the Assessing Seminar Skills hand-out
from last week to help you assess your work in seminar:
3.6+ (very active) = You actively participate and your contributions have been valuable to the
quality of the seminar; you have played a leadership role in seminar by encouraging others to
participate, by modeling effective “mining” of the texts, and by being an engaged listener.
3.0+ (somewhat active) = You have been a regular contributor and often supported others by
providing insights into the texts, actively listening, and stimulating other’s responses.
2.0+ (occasionally active) = You have provided some points about themes in the texts and
helped to find passages in the texts, as well as being an engaged listener.
1.0 = You have almost never spoken and sometimes have come unprepared.
YOUR SEMINAR GRADE:_________
C. Critical Thinking/Communicating
What evidence can you cite about your critical thinking and communicating skills to show greater
evidence of understanding and skill development? For example, in critical thinking, you might cite
the comments on your seminar papers from Haley and/or Cam that reflects a clearer understanding
of P.I.E. (which fosters critical thinking), or you might cite an ability to read a text from the
perspective of themes such as identity development and therefore be more able to contribute to the
1
discussions in seminars, or you might cite research that you have done outside of class to deepen
your own understanding of a particular theme or issue (cultural history, etc.).
In reference to your communicating skills, you could reference a specific incident where you used a
particular multicultural communication skill (including but not limited to active or deep listening
skills, Nieto’s anti-oppression skills, Non-Violent Communication skills, cultural cues (including both
verbal and non-verbal cues, the use of empathy, etc) to demonstrate a deepening ability to foster
understanding and improve relationships. Remember to use Barna’s article on “Stumbling Blocks to
Intercultural Communication” for other tools to discuss your growth in communication.
D. Critical Reflection. Thinking about the different themes in our class and their relevancy to our
multicultural country and interconnected world, what new learning have you gained? How has the
reading of our texts, the seminars in your small groups, the different learning activities such as your work
on the two cultural interviews, and the discussions/lectures we’ve had in our class contributed to a deeper
understanding of your identity, values, and/or understanding of the world around you? Give specific and
concrete examples in this paragraph of how you have grown or put together some of these ideas and their
impact on your life.
E. General Self-Evaluation
If you giving yourself a mid-quarter grade, what grade best represents the overall quality
and quantity of your work thus far this quarter? _________
 Extraordinary (4.0) Exceeded expectations, consistently outstanding in all areas
including being an invaluable member of the learning community.


Outstanding (3.6+) Strongly contributed to the learning community and
demonstrated excellent achievement in reading, writing and communication skill
development.
Very good (3.0 range) Demonstrated excellence in most areas and consistently
performed at a very good level in all aspects of the course; completed all the work
and made a strong effort; effective contributor to the learning community.

Adequate/OK (2.0 range) Completed all the work in a competent manner; reading,
writing, and/or communication skills need further improvement; inconsistent in
contributing to the learning community.

Below average (1.0 range) Didn’t complete some of the work; had a number of
unexcused absences and/or quality of work needs improvement to reflect minimum
college-level standards.
Please explain why you think that grade best represents your work this quarter?_______
F. LEARNING GOALS: Based on the evaluation/assessment of your own learning and
participation in this class, what new goals do you want to create for yourself to achieve the level
of learning (and grade) you want from this 11-week learning experience? What can you teachers
and teaching assistants do to help you achieve these new goals?
