SP 2.1 Panopticism
About a third of the way through his text, Michel Foucault
asserts, “[t]he Panopticon is a marvelous machine which, whatever use
one may put it to, produces homogenous effects of power.” Write an
essay in which you explain the machinery of the Panopticon as a
mechanism of power. As part of your essay, and in order to explain
what Foucault is getting at, turn to two examples—one of his, and then
one of your own.
Key terms: surveillance, power, knowledge, punish, discipline, fear, the
body, and the gaze.
