Subject: Equal Taxes for all
Dear Sir or Madame,
I have been with my life partner for the last 4.5 years. We were married
in the city of San Francisco on February 13th 2004, and had our marriage
voided later that same year.
I lost my job during the recession, on August 28th 2003, and had my
unemployment run out January 2004. With my partner's support, I have
returned to school to train for a change in career. As a student focused
on my studies, I have not been working and have been completely
dependent on my partner. If we were recognized as legally married, he
would be able to claim me as a dependent. Unfortunately, we are forced
to file individual returns for 2004.
This tax situation is unfair, and should be rectified. I hope you will
take our situation into consideration as you consider tax reform.
Sincerely,
Thomas E. Bailey
San Francisco, CA.
