Unit description:
Employs a series of demonstrations to teach the use of the camera and basic skills of
black-and-white photography. In the first semester, students are given assignments
introducing specific aspects of the medium. In the second semester, they explore an
individual project. Regular group critiques and individual consultation with the lecturer
provide feedback and the exchange of ideas. Thematic slide lectures relate to assignments
and give students exposure to historical and contemporary photographic imagery.

Unit description:
Builds on students’ competency in black-and-white photography by giving instruction in
the use of medium and large format cameras, the Zone System, and studio and flash
lighting. Colour photography is introduced. Students explore an individual project to
produce a coherent group of work for their final portfolio. Studio theory is taught in a
weekly slide lecture covering the history of photography.

Unit description:
Has the same broad objectives as FSH210, except that it is designed to provide students
with technical and theoretical support in their respective major studies, particularly where
those studies involve some use of photographic processes.

Offered: Hbt: (fy) ie sem 1 & 2,
Unit description:
Requires students to design and develop an individual project for the year. The project is
monitored through weekly group critique sessions and individual consultation with the
lecturers. Emphasis is placed on the innovative expression of ideas and techniques which
use the formal and conceptual qualities of the photographic medium. Students first
present a short proposal for their projects, then later in the year, make a more formal
presentation of their work, placing it in the context of historical and contemporary
practice. Additional studio theory seminars are presented by lecturers on topics including
contemporary international photography, critical writing on photography and
professional practice. The development and presentation of a group exhibition or
publication forms part of the program.
