Cabala (or “Kaballah”) – n., the ancient Jewish tradition of mystical interpretation of the Bible,
first transmitted orally and using esoteric methods (including ciphers).
kopek – n., a monetary unit of Russia and some other countries of the former Soviet Union;
aluminum bronze coin, 1/100th value of a ruble.
gabardine – n, a loose long upper garment, worn particularly by Jewish men.
ambush – v., to make a surprise attack on someone from a concealed position.
heartrending– adj., distressing, tragic, traumatic, heartbreaking.
disheveled– adj., untidy, unkempt, bedraggled.
gawking – v., stare openly and stupidly.
girded– v. encircled; secured.
