QUICK GUIDE
Grant Funding and Proposal Writing Resources

Books
To find books on grant funding and proposal writing, go to the Library’s home page (http://library.kean.edu). Click Books,
E-books, Videos, & More to access the Kean Catalog. Type your key words in the search box underneath Find This. Click
Search. Scroll down to view the search results list. Make note of the location, call number, and status for any titles of
interest. A library location designation of Main Collection means that the book is a circulating title shelved on the second
and third floors of the Library, while a library location designation of Reference Collection means that the book does not
circulate and is shelved in the Reference Collection (located on the first floor of the Library) or in the Reference Collection
Annex (located on the second floor of the Library). A designation of U.S. Government Online Document or Electronic
Resource means that the item is available online; you may access the material online by clicking the title, then clicking the
hyperlink next to the words Linked Resource.

Listed below are select print reference titles provided for quick look-up by call number in the Reference Collection
(located on the first floor of the Library) or in the Reference Collection Annex (located on the second floor of the Library).
The first column displays the reference call number. The second column displays the corresponding title.

requirements and restrictions, application procedures, etc.

This guide provides a link to SPIN (available on-campus). SPIN (Sponsored Program Information
Network) is provided courtesy of Kean’s Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP). SPIN
offers information about grant-funding opportunities from federal, non-federal, and international
funding agencies. SPIN is listed on the left-hand side of the research guide’s first page.
Electronic Database
To search the Library’s databases for information about grant-funding opportunities, go to the Library’s home page
(http://library.kean.edu). Click Articles & More to access the Databases. Brief directions are provided below to help you
navigate this recommended database. [Note: When you are off-campus, you will be asked to enter your Kean Library
Barcode after you click on a database name. Your barcode is located on the back of your Kean University photo ID card.]

To search LexisNexis Academic for information about funding opportunities listed in
the Federal Register:
Go to the Library’s home page at http://library.kean.edu.
Click the Articles & More button to access the Databases page.
Click the letter L on the alphabetical menu.
Click LexisNexis Academic.
Click the Search By Content Type button above the search box.
Click Federal Statutes and Regulations from the menu that appears.
Click Advanced Options (just below the search box).
Keep the checkmark next to Federal Register, but remove the checkmarks next to all of the
other options listed under Sources. Click Apply.
Type your key terms in the search box.
Use the “and” operator to combine terms and retrieve items that contain all of the terms.
Use double quotes (“”) to retrieve items that contain specific phrases. Use the asterisk (*)
as a truncation symbol after a word root to retrieve articles with the word root and all of
its possible word endings. For example, type:
funding and opportunity and "grant proposal*"
Click Search.
Click a title to access the full-text document.
E-mail the document you are currently viewing by clicking E-mail (envelope icon) located
in the top right-hand corner of your screen.
