CLASS TITLE:
ASSISTANT ATHLETIC TRAINER
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the Athletic Director, the Assistant Athletic Trainer is responsible for
assisting in the development, coordination, and administration of a comprehensive sports
medicine program for college intercollegiate sports. The assistant athletic trainer will also
perform professional and administrative services essential for the successful implementation and
development of the program.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
1.
Assist with the implementation of the sports medicine program for the college, including:
injury prevention programs, injury evaluations, injury management, injury treatment and
rehabilitation, educational programs and counseling for student-athletes. [E] Primary
responsibility is with the Women’s Volleyball team.
2.
Provide athletic training services for the college’s athletic department, including
attendance at scheduled team practices and home competitions as necessary. [E]
3.
Assist with physical examinations and medical referrals for student-athletes to determine
their ability to practice and compete. [E]
4.
Work in conjunction with athletic department staff to ensure safety in the design and
implementation of fitness, nutrition and conditioning programs customized to meet
individual student-athlete needs. [E]
5.
Evaluate and recommend new techniques and equipment that would enhance the benefit
of the sports medical program.
6.
Establish and maintain accurate records of athletes for eligibility based on physical
examinations; maintain accurate and detailed records of injuries, treatment and
correspondence with physicians. [E]
7.
May assist with athlete insurance claims process; correspond with providers and
insurance companies to ensure payment.
8.
Perform related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE OF:
District organization, operations, policies and objectives.
Methods, practices, terminology, and techniques used in athletic training activities, including
the prevention of injuries.
Advanced principles of anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, and nutrition.
Symptoms of athletic injuries, applicable treatment and first aid methods.
Musculoskeletal rehabilitation protocols and techniques.
Physical fitness and conditioning programs related to athletics.
Health related physical fitness and weight loss programs for the general population.

Rules and regulations applying to safe equipment operation and medical care.
Recordkeeping techniques.
School insurance policy.
Principles of supervision and program administration.
Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.

Applicable sections of the State Education Code.
Familiarity with Pacific Coast Athletic Conference governing rules.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in appropriate area of specialization
and two years directly related experience.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Certification by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification (NATABOC);
valid CPR/AED certificate and a valid California driver license.
WORK DIRECTION, LEAD AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
May provide work direction to student athletic trainers and work study students.

Staff, faculty, administrators, students, physicians, parents and guardians, other colleges,
community organizations and vendors.
PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Moderate physical activity with intermittent standing, walking, bending and stooping; occasional
light lifting and carrying of objects weighing 35 pounds or less; ability to work at computer for
extended periods of time, including repetitive use of computer keyboard, mouse or other control
devices; ability to travel to a variety of locations on and off campus as needed to conduct district
business.

EMOTIONAL EFFORT:
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships involving appropriate interactions
and communications personally, by phone and in writing with a variety of individuals and/or
groups of individuals from diverse backgrounds on a regular, ongoing basis; ability to concentrate
on detailed tasks for extended periods of time and/or intermittently while attending to other
responsibilities; ability to work effectively under pressure on multiple tasks concurrently while
meeting established deadlines and changing priorities.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Primarily works in either an office environment (athletic training room facility) or athletic event
locations; frequently conducts events in an outside environment during possible inclement
weather, Exposure to dust, dirt, heat, cold, fumes, steam, moisture, noise, etc. Subject to
frequent interruptions by individuals in person or by telephone, intermittent exposure to
individuals acting in a disagreeable fashion.. May work at any district location or authorized
facility during day and/or evening hours with occasional evenings, holidays and/or weekends on
an as-needed basis. Occasional local travel may be requested.
