Francesco Rubino, MD is Chief of Gastrointestinal Metabolic Surgery, an Associate Professor of Surgery and Director of the Diabetes Surgery Center at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center.

Under his leadership, the hospital was the first academic medical center in U.S. and worldwide to offer a dedicated and highly specialized approach to surgical treatment of type 2 diabetes. As one of the world's leaders in the research, teaching and practice of metabolic, diabetes and bariatric surgery, Dr. Rubino's pioneering surgical approaches hold enormous promise for the millions in America and worldwide living with obesity and diabetes. His clinical expertise includes laparoscopic bariatric/metabolic and upper digestive surgery. His research interests include clinical and translational studies to elucidate the mechanisms of action of gastric bypass and other bariatric procedures and the role of gastrointestinal mechanisms in the pathophysiology of obesity and diabetes.

Dr Rubino’s work contributed to transform bariatric surgery from a mere weight loss therapy into a surgical approach intentionally aimed at treating diabetes and metabolic illnesses. He provided strong leadership as the organizer of the Diabetes Surgery Summit and the 1 st and 2 nd World Congress on

Interventional Therapies for Type 2, bringing together over 1,000 multidisciplinary diabetes experts from

62 countries. He served as a co-convener for the Position Statement of the International Diabetes

Federation (IDF) on bariatric surgery for obese diabetes and was as a member of the expert committee organized by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) to define criteria for the definition of disease remission in diabetes.

In 2011, Dr. Rubino was selected by both US News & World Report and Castle Connolly as one of

"America's Top Doctors," and in 2009 was selected by

Crain’s NY Business

as a notable "40 under 40", which recognizes young rising stars in the healthcare, business, non-profit and entertainment industries.

Dr. Rubino is a member of many professional organizations, including the American Society for

Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT), the

Italian Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (SICOB). He serves as Chairman for the Metabolic

Surgery Committee of the International Federation for Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Diseases

(IFSO). He is the recipient of numerous awards, has given hundreds of presentations throughout the world, and authored or co-authored more than 70 articles in peer-reviewed journals and more than 20 book chapters.

Dr. Rubino received his MD and completed his residency in general surgery at the Catholic

University/Policlinico Gemelli in Rome, Italy. He completed fellowships in laparoscopic surgery at the

European Institute of Telesurgery in Strasbourg, France; Mount Sinai Medical Center, New York; the

Cleveland Clinic.
