Introductory comments

BioStart is a preparation program (10–14 February) for people who are unsure about:

• what to expect in the biological sciences

• what skills are needed for success

• what resources are available to help develop these skills

The program is designed to meet a variety of needs of students entering the Bachelor of

Nursing, Bachelor of Health Science and Bachelor of Human Movement courses. It will be particularly beneficial to students without a TCE science background, and to alternative entry and mature age students returning to study.

Admission & prerequisites

Enrolment is open to any student who has accepted a place in Bachelor of Nursing,

Bachelor of Human Movement or Bachelor of Health Science.

Course objectives

The program aims to:

• introduce students to the culture of the School of Human Life Sciences

• introduce the types of learning tasks required within the School

• assist students to develop a range of appropriate skills for University study

• Support students through their first semester of study

Career outcomes

At the conclusion of the program, participants will be:

• better able to make the transition to University

• better prepared for the academic demands involved

• more likely to successfully complete their chosen course of study

Course structure

The program incorporates a series of short lectures, introducing a variety of content from the first year of study in the School of Human Life Sciences. The material from these

BioStart lectures is explored in tutorial and laboratory session, introducing teaching and learning methods used within the School. It is taught by the staff of the School of Human Life

Sciences, assisted by Learning Development, Student Services and Flexible Education Unit staff. In addition, academic staff on each campus provide sample lectures and tutorials.
