Trashcan and Recycling 1415-0012 Prime Sponsor: Jacob Greenberg Recommendation President’s Signature Co-Sponsors: Date Introduced: Date of Voting: Final Vote: Yea Sens Present Nay Abstain VP Senate Affairs Signature Whereas, It is in Ithaca College’s mission statement to commit to the responsible and sustainable management of natural and human resources, Whereas, Despite a similar Trashcan bill introduced 3/4/13, there are still very few places for students, faculty, and staff members to dispose of items on the walkways and paths around campus, generating an inappropriate amount of trash and cigarette butts littered throughout campus, Whereas, The lack of cigarette disposals does not discourage smoking, but encourages littering, and cigarette litter deteriorates Ithaca’s appearance as a responsible and sustainable campus more then the presence of cigarette disposals do, Whereas, there are financial incentives to adding more cigarette disposals, such as allowing custodian staff to dedicate their time to tasks other then picking up individual cigarette butts, It is resolved that the Ithaca College Student Government Association recommends that Ithaca College implement trash cans in high – pedestrian trafficked areas and along pathways that are currently lacking, In addition, be it resolved further that the SGA recommends that Ithaca College include a recycling bin next to each trashcan, to uphold our virtues as a environmentally responsible institution, In addition, be it resolved further that the SGA recommends that Ithaca College implements cigarette receptacles outside all building entrances, and along frequented paths through campus. Cigarette disposals may be wall mounted, to have less of a physical presence, and may include a sticker informing students to smoke at the appropriate range from each facility.
