Strategic Action Plan 2010-13
Center for Health Disparities Research
ECU Values:
ECU’s Center for Health Disparities Research adheres to the established “enduring
values” outlined in ECU Tomorrow: A Vision for Leadership and Service (2007), ECU’s
long-range strategic plan and is aligned to the Strategic Action Plan, 2010-13 and its
corresponding Key Performance Indicators that advance our Mission.

Key Strategic Planning Principles:
Several key planning principles were established to develop this strategic plan:






Support for student success throughout the continuum of their college
learning experience;
Adherence to ECU Tomorrow: A Vision for Leadership and Service, 2007 and
the ECU Strategic Action Plan, 2010-13;
Support for effective leadership and professional development;
Purposeful decision-making, moving towards clearly defined goals and
measurable objectives;
A commitment to institutional effectiveness; and,
Allocation of resources to ensure attainment of established priorities.

Promote, support, conduct, and increase research on health
disparities using integrated, multi-disciplinary approaches.
Build community partnerships and new programs to raise awareness
about health disparities and promote healthy lifestyles.
Play a leadership role in creating and sustaining partnerships with
underserved and rural communities to reduce health disparities.

Goal 1:
Promote, support, conduct, and increase research on health
disparities using integrated, multi-disciplinary approaches.
Outcome Objective:
 Increase the number of faculty pilot studies on health disparities
(baseline data to be collected in Year1.)
 Establish and enhance a framework to support interdisciplinary research
on health disparities.
Measure(s):
 Develop a program to fund faculty pilot-studies on health
disparities; assess the number of applications received and
funded.
 Assess the number of faculty hired or appointed to the center to
conduct health disparities research.
 Assess the number of publications on health disparities by center
faculty (baseline data to be collected.
 Assess the number of grant applications for disparities research by
center faculty (baseline data to be collected.)
Goal 2:
Build community partnerships and new programs to raise
awareness about health disparities and promote healthy lifestyles.
Outcome Objective:
 Increase access to information and resources about health disparities and
healthy lifestyles.
Measure(s):
 Develop an interdisciplinary lecture series on health disparities;
assess faculty and community attendance.
Outcome Objective:
 Create mentoring programs for minority medical and dental students to
enhance retention.
Measure(s):
 Assess the number of faculty and community members hired or
appointed to the center to engage in educational and training
activities.

Outcome Objective:
 Build new pipeline programs to increase the number of minorities in
STEM majors and biomedical programs and careers.
Measure(s):
 Assess the number of grant applications by center faculty for
mentoring, healthy community lifestyles, and/or pipeline
programs (baseline data to be collected.)
Goal 3:
Play a leadership role in creating and sustaining partnerships with underserved and
rural communities to reduce health disparities.
Outcome Objective:
 Build new partnerships between ECU faculty and community
organizations.
 Build new partnerships with minority medical associations, physician and
nursing groups.
 Build new partnerships and collaborations with minority-serving colleges
and universities.
Measure(s):
 Develop a program to fund faculty-community collaborative
projects on health disparities; assess the number of applications
received and funded.
 Assess the number of faculty and community members hired or
appointed to the center to engage in partnership- and
collaboration building.
 Assess the number of partnerships and collaborative agreements
established with minority medical groups and community
organizations (baseline data to be collected.)
 Assess the number partnerships and collaborative agreements
established with minority-serving colleges and universities
(baseline data to be collected).
