Graduate Directed Independent Study
Directed Independent Study permits the intermediate or advanced student an opportunity to undertake
the study of a topic not otherwise offered in the graduate curriculum or to pursue a topic beyond or in
greater depth than is possible within the context of a regular course.
Students must complete the center portion of the form below with the faculty member. A course
syllabus that defines the problem/topic to be studied, indicates the course readings and assignments,
outlines the weekly schedule for the course, and describes the student’s final product must also be
attached. Please also make sure the syllabus includes a grading scale for this class.
Once the course content and requirements have been agreed upon, this form must be signed by the
student, faculty member, and approved by the Graduate Program Director.
Finally, submit this form to the student’s advisor at least ONE WEEK PRIOR to the last day of
drop/add to ensure the course is added to the student’s class schedule.
