Self Portrait
Mixed Media:
A technique involving the use of two or more artistic media, such as
ink and pastel or painting and collage, that are combined in a single
composition.
History of the Self Portrait:
 A portrait an artist makes using himself or herself as its subject.
 History dates back to the earliest times, but wasn’t until the
Renaissance era in 15th century until the artists started to depict
themselves as the main subject.
 Self-portraits have a longer continuous history in Asian art than
in Europe.
 Illuminated manuscripts contain a number of apparent selfportraits.
 Albrecht Dürer was an artist highly conscious of his public
image and reputation; he probably depicted himself more often
than any artist before him, producing at least twelve images.
 One of the most famous and most prolific of self-portraitists was
Vincent van Gogh, who painted himself thirty-seven times.
 The self-portrait can be a very effective form of advertising for
an artist.
