Contemporary Art: Happening in the
Present
• Artists express themselves in a variety of media,
anything goes!
• Modernism: logic, simplicity, and order. Always
reacting to what came before, so new art
movements were always occurring. Traditional
subjects and media, but abstraction and
performance and some photography styles were
most non-traditional
• Post-modernism: ambguity, uncertainty, and
contradiction now are valid forms of artistic
expression.
Video Art
• Video art is a type of art which relies on moving
pictures and video and/or audio data.
• Video art may not employ the use of actors, may
contain no dialogue, may have no
discernible narrative or plot, or adhere to any of
the other conventions that generally
define motion pictures as entertainment

Performance Art
• Art in which works in any of a variety of media are
executed premeditated before a live audience. Although
this might appear to be theater, theatrical performances
present illusions of events, while performance art presents
actual events as art
• It was closely linked to the ideological tenets and
philosophy of Conceptual Art, which insisted on ‘an art of
which the material is concepts’ and on ‘an art that could
not be bought and sold’; those who made performance
pieces did so as a statement against the gallery system and
the art establishment.
