Fulbright Application Procedures and Timeline

Updated March 1, 2016

Where do I apply?

If you are a full-time enrolled Temple student, you MUST apply through Fellowships Advising and meet the campus deadline. Information and advising are available at Fellowships Advising for Temple applicants. If you are not currently enrolled as a Temple University student, you MAY take advantage of the campus evaluation process or you may choose to apply as an at-large candidate directly to the

Institute of International Education (IIE). At-large applicants should review information for at-large candidates available on the Fulbright US Student Program website at http://us.fulbrightonline.org/applicants/getting-started .

What is the application timeline?

March 31, 2016: Fulbright competition opens for 2017-2018. As soon as possible, create an account on the Fulbright Embark platform .

June 30, 2016: Submit official or unofficial transcripts to the Fulbright Embark platform . You must upload one academic transcript from each post-secondary institution from which you received a degree.

Additional transcripts should be uploaded for coursework and grades not reflected on degree-granting transcripts. If submitting unofficial transcripts, they must be easy to read and include your name and the name of the institution.

August 22, 2016: Preliminary deadline. Submit the following application materials by the preliminary deadline and receive feedback on your application’s strengths and weaknesses. You will then have the opportunity to revise your application before the official campus deadline.

Abstract of the Statement of Grant Purpose

Brief explanation of your future plans upon returning to the U.S.

Statement of Grant Purpose

Personal Statement

September 9, 2016: Official campus deadline for Temple applicants. The application, including all supporting documents, must be in the Fulbright Embark on-line application system. Be sure to give your references this deadline, not the national deadline.

September/October 2016: Campus Interviews. The campus committee will evaluate your application based on a review of your materials and a brief 20 minute interview. The committee completes a campus evaluation, which is submitted with your application.

November-December, 2016: National screening committees meet to review applications.

Late January to February 2017: Results of national screenings announced

Spring/Summer 2017: Final results from individual country programs announced

What is involved in the application?

The application, which must be completed on line, consists of the following :

Statement of grant purpose-- two pages (only one page for ETA applicants)

Personal Statement (one page narrative intellectual history of yourself)

Three academic references

Foreign Language Proficiency Evaluation (where necessary)

Film/video, images, etc. as outlined in the “Supplementary Materials” section of the website for creative and performing arts applicants

One official or unofficial academic transcript from each post-secondary institution from which you received a degree. Additional transcripts should be uploaded for coursework and grades not reflected on degree-granting transcripts

For research/study grants: Letter(s) of support/affiliation from faculty, researchers or universities overseas indicating that they have reviewed your proposal and can in some way be of assistance to you while you are abroad. These letters vary, depending on the proposal, but might, for example, be a letter of preliminary acceptance from a university where you would like to study, a letter from a library granting you access to archives, or a letter from a scholar with whom you wish to study.

Fulbright Special Programs may have additional required materials.

Detailed instructions are available here .

Next Steps:

The following is a list of preliminary steps to take if you are interested in applying:

Attend a Fulbright information session .

Review Fulbright country pages . They often include guidelines about what subject areas are encouraged and in some cases, discouraged in a particular country. Also, please be aware of language requirements for each country. An applicant wishing to study in a non-English speaking country must have the desired proficiency in the language of the host country at the time of application.

Schedule an appointment with Barbara Gorka, Temple’s student Fulbright adviser. This is your opportunity to brainstorm and ask more in-depth questions regarding the Fulbright application process.

Gather information:

o Take advantage of the resources on the Fulbright program website . Here you can find application tips , statistics , factors in selection , Fulbright Alumni Ambassadors , as well as other useful information. o UK Fulbright Commission (for updates on U.K. program) o Additional site to search for Colleges and Universities outside the U.S. o Consult your academic advisor and professors about your plans for the Fulbright. Get them acquainted with your ideas. Fellowships Advising can also help put you in touch with Temple faculty, staff, and students who have indicated a willingness to advise students with the Fulbright application process. o Familiarize yourself with the educational resources (universities, research institutes, faculty, archives, etc.) available in the country of interest. If your proposal will include studying or conducting research at a particular overseas university or institute, it is your responsibility to gain admission or access to that institution. As such, Fulbright applicants should try to obtain detailed knowledge of programs, courses, or other educational opportunities (particularly faculty members) available at their chosen institution. The Education Abroad Office has quite a bit of helpful information to get you started on this process, including some overseas university catalogs.

Meet with potential recommenders. Talk with them about your plans and send draft essays for their review.

Participate in an IIE webinar .

Assemble preliminary application. Submit drafts to Fellowships Advising for review by the preliminary deadline.
