Competency Test
The first version will be taken on Monday, March 30th. There is no partial credit and you must
get at least 8 out 10 questions correct to “pass”. You may retake the test on a subsequent day if
you do not pass or are unhappy with your score. The retakes must be taken in the Math Center.
The test will be on sketching graphs of functions without the use of a calculator (grids will be
provided). The test will count up to 50 points toward your course point total. You will be able to
take the test up to four times. The grades will be assigned as follows.

The last grade earned is counted. Be aware of the effect of retaking. If you get 9 out of ten right
on the 1st attempt, you earn 45 points and can only do better by getting all problems right on the
second attempt. After the second attempt, it is impossible to earn 45 points again.
There is no time limit on these tests except for the closing times of the math center. You may not
use a calculator on the test. Retakes may not be taken on the same day.
You must see me
before retaking a test in order to discuss your answers and difficulties.
You may not bring anything into the test room with you. If you are caught taking problems from
the test room or sharing problems with other students, you risk getting an “F” in the course.
